The Japanese make games about some of the strangest things don’t they? The Berlin Wall (or ’Berlin no Kabe’) is an obscure game within the Trap-Em-Up genre that was originally released in Arcades back in 1991 by Kaneko and later ported to the Game Gear the same year. Before I talk about what the game is like here’s a summary of the story. The game is about a young boy and his mother and events that are very loosely tied to the barrier constructed by East Germany back in 1961. Heck if Japanese developers can make a game to celebrate Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (such as ’Factory Panic’ or ’Ganbare Gorubii!’) then why not make one about a big wall too right? Anyway in the game the boy’s mother says have a nice day to her son and goes out to a neighboring town to visit her aunt for a little while. However when she doesn’t return as promised the boy becomes worried and leaves to the neighboring town to look for her. When he arrives to around the area where she should be he is amazed to instead see a great wall (Ookina Kabe or おおきなかべ) surrounding the neighboring town. The boy sees no way in or through the wall and states that he must get through somehow and begins searching the area and striking the wall for suspicious spots. To his surprise he finds a weakened spot near the base of the wall that’s just big enough for him to crawl through and he decides to pass through. The light quickly fades until it is pitch-black and the boy couldn’t even see his hand b.../b
