Battle Ace is the title that would launch with the ill-fated SuperGrafx console developed in November of 1989. Being a sort of combination of Space Harrier and After Burner (due to its fast pace and arcade-style action) with the cockpit view of a conventional flight simulation one would think the game would be the best of both worlds with the added muscle that the SuperGrafx possessed over the PC Engine. Sadly even with a decent soundtrack and decent framerate there’s little hiding that Battle Ace just comes off as unimpressive and in a word boring. The game is spread across seven slow-progressing levels filled with enemies as well as obstacles that need to be avoided. Equipped with a Vulcan Laser for onscreen enemies and Photon Missiles for enemies in the distance you shoot down many enemies with different flying and shooting patterns to bring down the evil Destos Empire. If you need to make a hasty dodge then just do a barrel roll! The levels are basically all the same (just with different themes) and are fairly long for a game like this. While the boss battles are at least a little interesting the game as a whole feels uninspired with very bland level designs and you probably won’t ever go back to it after clearing it. More importantly it doesn’t really show off what the SuperGrafx can do. The game was made available for download at the Japanese Playstation Store. This is a video of the game in action. Enjoy.
